How are things America?
Welcome to the Patriotic Professor. Glad you had the opportunity to stop by for office hours.
I consider myself a lifelong Christian who has returned to active practice later in my life as well as a firm believer in 2nd Amendment rights and freedoms of speech. I grew up in a mid-sized rural town where I learned the value of hard work, honesty and humbleness. When I began my academic journey, I was full of what I believed were fundamental democratic hopes and ideas. Ideas of equality, Ideas of reward for hard work and personal accountability. Commitment to individual rights and freedoms for everyone…regardless of ethnicity…social class or gender.
Throughout university and graduate school as well as living and working in the U.S. and abroad, I have always valued active debate and discussion as a means to strengthen, challenge or adjust my own thoughts and views. With that in mind, over time I began to see my values, morals, and ethics aligning more with the Right than the Left…I began to question what I had considered to be left leaning principles. At the same time, the more I engaged with those on the Left…especially those who were further down the rabbit hole…the more I noticed an unwillingness on their part to actually debate and discuss their stance. Conversations would shut down. Unwritten rules of “political correctness” guided interactions. More and more I saw the deeply rooted hypocrisy embedded in left wing ideology. With ambidextrous agility, the Left would champion free speech with one fist, raised in the air, while using the other to gag the speech of those they disagreed with. The Democratic party and the Left have lost touch with every day America and many of the founding principles of our great nation.
Just as I found myself awakening more and more truly as a conservative, so too did I find it hard and harder to openly voice my thoughts and opinions within academia. What was once an arena of open thought, discussion and debate had become a closed echo chamber of increasingly radical Leftist ideology. In the last 2 decades it has become even worse. Colleagues automatically assume that just because you work in academia, you obviously must also vote Democratic, be left leaning and use all the correct pronouns. If not, your voice is driven underground and to the fringe. In today’s toxic climate of cancel culture, doxing and censorship many who hold to traditional values and believe in the imperfect greatness of our nation are forced to self-censor. We must be ever mindful of what we say lest we too lose our livelihoods and have our heads placed in the social media guillotine of the Left.
I started The Patriotic Professor as a means of offering a voice of resistance from the inside. A look behind the curtain at how radical Left-wing ideology is impacting the education of our youth and the freedoms of our nation. Thank you all for stopping by.
